Ludorf / Müritz

The community of Ludorf has about 400 inhabitants living in three villages: Ludorf itself, Gneve and Zielow. There are two more settlements, Ludorfer Mühle andLudorf Ausbau. All of them are situated on the south-west end of the lake. Did I mention that Ludorf has a shore line of 8 km of length which is pretty much?

Now comes what makes the places so special:

The church of Ludorf. Ludorf has a very unique church originating from the 13th century that has an octagonal floor plan. It's the only one of its kind in northern Germany.

The Manor House of Ludorf. Further, there's a three hundred year-old manor house bearing the hotel and restaurant '
Morizaner',a park with old trees, ponds and alike. By the way, there are storks, of course.

The 'Turmhügel' In the meadows near the Müritz there is an ancient site originating from the early middle ages where once were a small fortification and some farmhouses. Now there is only a hill with a surrounding trench and beautiful trees left. On the hill there's a mighty oak tree and a romantic grave.

Right by the Müritz we have a camp site and a small beach.

A dead end street leads to Zielow, situated towards the narrowest part of the southern Müritz and offers opportunities for renting canoes and sailing boats. There is also ahostel and some small hotels as well.

The way we walk. All of these places are connected by streets and a hiking and biking trail, the 'Müritzwanderweg' that leads all around the 117 square kilometres lake.

The Steinhorn is covered by forests and is kept under strict protection because there are besides other wild animalssea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla). There's only one narrow trail around the Steinhorn which means that you'll find pure nature there. Enthusiasts will also find that ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) and falcons chose Ludorf as their favorit place.

Gneve actually consists of a handful of houses. However, it gives access to two of the most important nature preservation areas of the region:

View over the Müritz. The peninsulae 'Großer Schwerin' and 'Steinhorn' between Ludorf and Gneve. During early spring and late fall myriads of migrant birds take a rest on the Großer Schwerin. Only once per year, around Christmas time you can go there on a guided tour.

The alley to Gneve. From Gneve to Ludorf you can take a walk of one mile along a winding alley that is guided by old chestnut trees.
